BRHADDHVANI (meaning “Big or Universal Sound”) is an NGO based in Chennai, a research and training centre for musics of the world, founded in 1989 by Prof. Karaikudi S Subramanian, a ninth generation Vina vidwan. The institute opens up music to everyone and works towards holistic music education in a global context, combining art and science, tradition and technology.
On the Board of Trustees is India’s renowned classical vocalist, Vidushi Bombay Jayashri. Brhhadhvani using COMET methodology (Correlated Objective Music Education & Training) develops curriculum from pre-school to high school children.
Brhaddhvani explores the fundamentals of Indian Classical music in relation to the MIND, EXPRESSION, BODY, AND THE SOCIETY. Brhaddhvani is committed to disseminating Music Education amongst children and ignite the latent creative energies present in individuals and give a foundation to develop musical intelligence.

Dr. Karaikudi S Subramanian is the Founder-Director, Brhaddhvani, Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World, Chennai)
His background and work in the field of performance on the vina and his impact in music education and therapy in the contemporary context is exemplary.
Dr. KSS is a ninth generation performing vina artiste in a family of vina players who were patronized by the Rajas of Pudukkotta in the early 18th century. His grand uncle and adoptive father, the recent vina exponent, Karaikudi Vinai Sambasiva Iyer (1888-1957) was one of the first to get the first President’s award in 1952, along with Ariakkudi Ramanujam Iyengar, Ustad Allaudin Khan and Mustaq Hussein Khan.
Dr. KSS is a Ph.D in Ethnomusicology (1985) from Wesleyan University (Residency: 1975-1979). Bachelors in chemistry and masters in English Literature. He Has taught in Universities around the world.
He has developed the system of holistic music education called COMET, Correlated Objective Music Education and Training which combines, tradition and technology, arts and science, preservation and propagation methods and reaches out to dancers and theatre actors, children in villages and cities suiting the contemporary demands in the modern India.
In 1989 he founded Brhaddhvani, Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World as a non-profit model of a new generation music organization, an NGO. (www.brhaddhvani.org). He got the support of The Ford Foundation (1993-2000), Impact foundation (2002), India Foundation for the Arts (2003-2006), Sangeet Natak Akademi (2007). The greatest musicians of our times in the traditional South Indian music, such as, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, K.V. Narayanaswamy, Dr. Sreepada Pinakapani (turning 100 this year) and Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, had been resident teachers at Brhaddhvani.
